HISTORY OF PawPrint ROAD
RACE
(Presented as a
community service by the Rock Hill Striders Running Club)
“This race has raised
$27,543 for homeless pets” (1997-2002)
RACE DATE – February 22, 2003
Race
Director Ernie LaCasse and Race Treasurer Sharon Caskey got the idea for the PawPrint Road Race in 1996 when they read a newspaper
article about a homeless puppy who had been struck by a car and left on the
side of the road. A Fort Mill Police
Officer discovered the puppy, and took her to one of the York County animal adoption agencies which provided love
and care for the puppy and named her Phoenix. Phoenix’s injuries were so severe
(spine and internal organs) that she did not survive.
Ernie
and Sharon decided
to put on a Road Race to benefit agencies in York County which rescue, shelter and
find loving homes for abandoned pets.
The race will be held annually and Phoenix will be on the race shirt
each and every year. Phoenix lives!!!
